Mineral resources in Bulgaria

Bulgaria possesses relatively rich mineral-resources, including vast reserves of lignite and anthracite coal; non-ferrous ores such as copper, lead, zinc and gold. It has large deposits of manganese ore in the north-east. Smaller deposits exist of iron, silver, chromite, nickel and others. Bulgaria has abundant non-metalliferous minerals such as rock-salt, gypsum, kaolin and marble.

Bulgaria has a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic mineral resources. Both iron and manganese ore are extracted, although output of iron ore covers only a fraction of the steel industry's requirements. Lead-zinc and copper deposits are sufficient to support large non-ferrous metallurgical works, notably at Kurdzhali and Pirdop.

Several significant gold deposits exist and have attracted foreign investors. Proven deposits of more than 50 non-metallic minerals exist, among them refractory dolomites, quartzites, kaolin, marble, refractory clay and gypsum. There are deposits of uranium in the Rodope area, which yielded 600 tonnes in the 1980s, but extraction was reduced after 1989 and then phased out altogether.
